¶ Porches
- Porches should be included if heated by fixed heating devices;
- They should be included if there is direct access to the dwelling but no separating door, whether heated or not;
- They should not be included if unheated and there is a separating door to the dwelling. In this context ‘porch’ means an addition protruding entirely from the line of the external wall of the dwelling; an entrance lobby that is within such line should be included.

Example 1: Entrance lobby with no internal door
If a porch is not separated from the dwelling by an internal door, as shown in the following diagram, it is included in the total floor area of the BER assessment even if there are no fixed heating devices in the porch.

Example 2 : Unheated entrance lobby with internal door, within line of dwelling
The entrance lobby is unheated and is separated from the rest of the dwelling by an internal door. This entrance lobby is, however, within the line of the building envelope. In DEAP this type of entrance lobby is always included in the assessment.

Example 3: Unheated entrance lobby with internal door, beyond line of dwelling
Here the porch is again unheated and separated from the dwelling by a door but this time the porch juts out beyond the line of the wall. In this case the porch is always excluded from the assessment.

Example 4: Unheated entrance lobby with internal door, in a corner
In this case, the porch is in a “corner” of the dwelling, is unheated and is separated from the dwelling by a door. This entrance lobby is within the line of the building envelope. In DEAP this type of entrance lobby is included in the assessment.
¶ Example 5: Unheated entrance lobby with internal door, partially within the line of the external wall
In this case, as part of the porch is within the line of the building envelope, it is included in the assessment.
